# Privacy as a property of the substrate

Every transition already carries a proof, and a proof separates the fact that conditions hold from the data that makes them hold. Keeping the witness private while proving the rule was followed is therefore what the system does natively. Private balances that remain auditable, order flow that stays confidential and still settles correctly, regulated activity where a supervisor verifies compliance without seeing the book: on other platforms each of these needs a separate system bolted on, and here they are the default mode of the machinery, available whenever an application wants them.
